What part of NC you in, GIRL? They are all around you! Carefull, they can kill you if you eat too many of those apples. And they are yummy! Seriously, do you not know any actual "folk" there who can tell you about such things? That's the only way to learn this stuff. You can't from books. The first time I ever saw one was when I went hunting for a drunk girlfriend of mine on the interstate in Columbia, South Carolina. Then I ran into a bunch of them on the side of a dirt road on the way to my new digs in TN and asked my landlady what they were. That's when I got the 411. Took her about 3 hours while I cooked her the best (probably only) Sicilian dinner she'd ever had. Turned out about a mile away lived a couple of VERY old people who adopted me and turned me into an almost genuine hillbilly filled with all sorts of grusome information like how to cook squirrels (I love squirrels, but not eating love) and such and how to attract hummers and feed raccoons without getting bit and why possums shouldn't be killed and things like that. And me...raised on the Lower East Side of New York City. Can you believe it? Country boy! Card-carrying member of the Memphis chapter of Democratic Socialists of America, too. Yee-haw!
