This stuff happens all the time. My child therapist, as I grew older, a very good man BTW, had me do a lot of reading about child psychology, and tried to get me to understand how common my situation was so that, at least, I didn't feel so strange about it. Also so that I could understand how much worse so many others had it. There's no "cure" for such things, but placing it in perspective does go a long way. Even those barrel-makers had it good compared to some others.
