My memory isn’t what it used to be so I had to take another look. Stevens is not my favorite. At times he is a bit too cold and detached for me. I tend to be a bit of a Romantic. Stupid that way, I suppose, and part of what has held me back all these years, perhaps.

My favorite is the fifth stanza. He seems there to be most in touch with the bird(s), what they are and what they mean to him, body to body. Spirit to spirit. Feeling their echos after they’ve sung and hearing an affect of meaning in it (innuendo).
