Just a few moments ago I was rereading in Thoreau’s journals about his youthful adventures and was reminded about the age-old philosophical struggle, are we part of nature or outside of it?

Good old—young—Henry was fishing at Walden Pond with a friend, caught a large slew of fish and they decided to fry them up on the spot. However, they built too big a fire and the woods were sent ablaze. Henry went running one way and his friend another to warn the neighbors and bring help but it was not enough to save a very large portion of the woods which burned to the ground.

Later, in his journals, Henry found himself thinking that after a long time feeling guilt he no longer did. That this was no more than what lightning would have done, so, why?

We internalize so much when it is merely nature.
