It IS the dance of love, is it not?
How it evolved out of samba has always been such a curiosity, in much the same way rockabilly evolved out of the blues.
Black Orpheus was one of my favorite films when I was a kid. I was reading the Autobiography of Malcolm X when I watched it and only by coincidence studying Greek tragedy and philosophy in a summer program at The New School. It was a vital moment for me.
And only a few blocks away The Velvet Underground was getting their act together.
The influence of bossa nova/samba on “Soul Love” was so distinct. Reuben mentioned something about that Zoom discussion. We’d been debating some ideas about the “Five Years” lyrics. He’s very insistent about them being abstract while I tend to see them being very direct. But it is hard to tell what Reuben means at times (me, too, at times; we’re both a bit noxious on line and difficult to “read”...snarky, speaking of abstraction!!).
Too bad one cannot “bossa nova” social media. Nothing ever very “smooth” here...
