I know this looks long—it probably is—but everything looks longer in these silly boxes. It’s all business, though, having to do with that “link” thing. And it isn’t “mansplaining” –I hope—just me being kind of windy...you’d be surprised how few actual human beings there are out in this part of the woods, other than raccoons.
Anyway, business. I still have not heard from Medium, but I’ve been reviewing the whole matter. After setting up a new publication today I noticed several different things. And I suspect I know what Medium will say if and when they do respond.
Medium does not care ETHICALLY about the source of images. They only care LEGALLY. That wordpress document was much more about “ethics.” If you look at the Medium rules for publishing articles you’ll see how lengthy and detailed they are in regard to publishing images and providing credit.
Now, take a look at the equivalent ABSENCE of rules for images when you publish images in a new publication. Or, when you open a new account. There simply are no rules. You can publish whatever images you like, from whatever source, providing no credit at all.
Medium does not want to be sued. Somewhere along the line, I’ll bet, they’ve figured out they will be sued in one instance but not in the other two. Why? How? I’m not a lawyer (thank goodness...you know what Raymond Chandler said about lawyers...).
Being the case that this link matter is more about ethics than legality, I think they won’t care. We’ll wait and see.
