However, in this case your research is an intrinsic part of your writing process. So even when you are not "writing" per se, you are still writing, I dare say. Every writer's process is different. And some have multiple drafts in process at the same time. Some also have different skill levels (nothing particularly wrong in that, no shame to be felt) so that some are simply capable of producing more within a given time frame. It takes me months to more than a year to produce a short novel where it takes others mere weeks. Nothing I can do about that. And writing "more" certainly isn't a guarantee of more money. Nor does one do it for the money (one hopes). It is merely what one does.
