Exactly. And yet, at critical times, is even that enough? Does the artist, given a certain place in society, owe something? Do they have an obligation to act outside of themselves, either in their work or even beyond it? Some artists, feeling they have no place (oh, I’ve been rejected, I make no money, etc.) say no. Others, feeling they “automatically” have a place, they have some success, “automatically” say yes. While others, acknowledging the place they have been “given” (a position, some awards) sometimes have to give it some thought, wondering if they might lose that place… In any event, even here, is it always, still, a matter of ego?
