A book, relatively new but several years old now, that explores the history behind the history of Jim Crow, going back to the late-19th century and delving into the post-emancipation politics of “colonization” that people like Lincoln so favored that, when it met with failure, ultimately led to segregationist laws. Bind Us Apart: How Enlightened Americans Invented Racial Segregation by Nicholas Guyatt from Basic Books.
